PUPPY POWER
Jen was out in California for a photoshoot. She texts me a photo of herself with a puppy.
“He’s from a shelter in Bakersfield. You’re going to love him.”
I’ve kind of got my hands full back east. First thought: something about, uh, consulting your darling husband? But what kind of heartless ass says anything bad about saving a puppy? I wait a couple hours until I’ve crafted my response.
“Does he have a name yet?”
Merle might work, he’s from Bakersfield. But the puppy is yet unnamed, maybe that will be Elliot’s job.
Two days later, she manages to get puppy on the plane. When we pick them up in Albany, Elliot is in disbelief. By the time we get home, he’s named our new puppy Sweetheart.
It is immediately obvious that Jen made the right decision.
There’s a lot going on right now. Turns out that having a puppy with a hot little belly, skittering around the house, chewing my slippers without destroying them, making up new games with the cats…is about the best thing that could have happened.
Posting a novel as fast as I could write was crazy intense. Besides needing to take a break, the world seems to have changed since that project started.
There are writers online who explain events better than I can. My aim for the moment is more of an antidote. A journal of here and there. This is the first installment. They’ll keep coming out each Wednesday.
Like the puppy, they will be short and sweet.

This Sunday in Woodstock:
Congratulations on your new family member!
Looking forward to your antidoting. And more Sweetheart.
