When I was a kid, my dad had a book titled something like "Always Bear Left." The basic idea was that for instance, when you went into a movie theater, most people would go in through the right hand door, so a smart person would do well to go in through the left and beat the crowds. The were lots of other examples but that's the gist. I can't begin to tell you how many times the words "always bear left" have popped into my head, and how well they've served me over a lifetime.
